Abstract: This study emerged in the context of a research project on “historical regional research” carried out between 1981 and 1985 at the central institute for social science research at the Free University of Berlin. It was financed by the free university of Berlin. The members of the research group were social and economic historians from different subject areas at the Free University of Berlin. They all shared the interest for a comparison of historical regions in Germany in the 19th and 20th century.
