We propose that the structure of local social ties may make certain communities more susceptible to voting for radical-right parties. We adopt the concept of “parochialism”, describing communities which are marked by higher within-group trust, but lower generalized trust. Individuals in parochial communities may feel more threatened by the prospective arrival of outsiders than those in cosmopolitan regions. As a consequence, they are more likely to support parties that seek to curtail the in ow of outsiders. To test these propositions, we introduce a new measure of parochialism. Based on 50,000 responses to a unique online survey in Germany, we use the strength of local dialects as a measure of parochialism. Using both aggregate and individual-level data, we demonstrate that dialect strength is a strong predictor of voting for the radical-right AfD party. Finally, we show that the e ect of parochialism becomes larger as the political salience of the recent refugee crisis increases.
ziblatt2019parochialism
https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/392a/39413b928a03ea5cffaf2b681efe0e0288e8.pdf. We focus on urban voters and use unique data from 34 of Germany's largest cities, divided into 1,905 neighborhoods, covering 2014-2017. We find that local poverty strengthens the AfD, while greater local immigrant presence weakens AfD support. Immigrants are more concentrated in poorer neighborhoods, but crucially, local poverty does not undermine the effect of immigrant presence. Immigrant concentration in poorer neighborhoods indirectly increases AfD support in advantaged neighborhoods. The latter offer fewer opportunities for intergroup contact and are less likely to have prior meaningful history of immigration, rendering their residents more vulnerable to acculturative stress. Indeed, very low prior shares of immigrants predict higher AfD support when the local share of immigrants suddenly increases.
GESIS-SSOAR
WZB
Adam, F., Föbker, S., Imani, D., Pfaffenbach, C., Weiss, G., Wiegandt, C. Are there segments within the electorate of PRRPs that can be regained by (specific) established non-populist parties? Focusing on the German context, the paper analyzes the availability of AfD voters on the electoral market. We demonstrate that relatively low availability can be traced back to the voters' distance in issue positions, the strength of populist attitudes and the interplay of distance and populist attitudes. Strong populist attitudes decrease the role of issue proximity for the likelihood of winning (back) AfD voters. Accordingly, simple repositioning towards stricter immigration laws is not a substantively profitable strategy. Our results indicate that an AfD voter's willingness to vote for an established party varies across parties. Generally, the German populist radical right voter's availability for the mainstream parties are rather low, and we shall thus discuss the strategic implication of our findings.
["2023","FDZ_Wahlen","GLES","GLES_input2022","GLES_pro","GLES_version12","SCOPUSindexed","article","english","indexproved","jak","review_proved","transfer22","zsextract
GLES-Bibliography
German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES)
Die German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES) ist das zentrale Infrastrukturprojekt in Deutschland für die kontinuierliche Erhebung und Bereitstellung von qualitativ hochwertigen Daten für die nationale und internationale Wahlforschung. Also, when do they perceive the center-right party as more left wing and evaluate it more negatively? To answer these two intertwined questions, this article leverages the dynamic political context of Germany during the 2013-17 election cycle. In this election cycle, the political arena became abruptly polarized, as the refugee crisis took place and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) broke into 13 subnational parliaments. Using a unique longitudinal dataset, I find that first-time AfD voters experienced a persuasion effect in such a polarized environment, as they became slightly more right wing. In addition, I find a contrast effect among these voters, as they came to perceive the Christian Democratic Union as more left wing and judged it more negatively. These findings have important implications for understanding the psychological processes of first-time RRP voters in a multiparty system, as they show how a polarized environment can shape RRP voters' ideological identity and motivate them to see the mainstream center-right party as an outgroup.
GESIS-SSOAR","GESIS Panel-Bibliography
FDB
urn:nbn:de:0168-ssoar-105349-9
ZA5665 v28.0.0
1467-9221
Abramowitz, A. We analyse the link between exclusive and inclusive identity (identifying with a more restricted ‘in-group’ versus identifying with a larger community) and the propensity to vote for radical right and radical left parties, using differences in individual identification with respondents’ home nation and as European citizens. The results show that exclusive individual identity is a good predictor of radical right party choice, even in the presence of redistributive and egalitarian values usually associated with left-wing voting. The results also speak to the literature on welfare chauvinism. While the presence of strong egalitarian and redistributive attitudes does indeed normally predict radical left party preference in line with previous findings, this relationship is complicated by the presence of exclusive individual identity, which moderates the former’s effect and can induce egalitarian voters to prefer radical right parties. In conclusion, the paper explores the interaction of identity and social class. This article argues that the electoral success of this political challenger, however, is rooted in more than the upsurge of populist resentments born out of these crises. Integrating theories about the activation of attitudes with arguments about the effects of exposure to local political contexts, I contend that the electoral success of the AfD reflects the mobilization of deep-seated nativist sentiments. To test these propositions, I draw on a large panel dataset of the AfD's electoral returns at the municipal level (N = 10,694) which I link to pre-crises data on the marginal success of extreme-right parties. Exploiting variation between municipalities located within the same county (N = 294), I estimate a series of spatial simultaneous autoregressive error models by maximum likelihood estimation. The results show that the success of the AfD is rooted in the local prevalence of nativist sentiments that date prior to the crises that fomented the formation of the challenger party - an effect that becomes stronger in the course of the radicalization of the AfD. I further demonstrate that the populist right AfD is best able to broaden its electoral appeal among local communities with an extreme-right sub-culture, particularly in Eastern Germany. This suggests that even small extreme-right networks can act as a breeding ground for the populist right and help spread xenophobic and nativist sentiments among citizens.
GESIS-SSOAR","GLES-Bibliography
FDB
urn:nbn:de:0168-ssoar-87810-0
ZA6827","ZA6832","ZA6820","ZA5738","ZA5739","ZA5740","ZA5741","ZA5742","ZA5743","ZA5744","ZA6821","ZA5700","ZA5701","ZA6800","ZA6801
Akkerman, A., ., Zaslove, A. This book argues that the increasing popularity of the radical right in Europe originates in community bonds: strong ties to one's locality motivate support for the radical right. These parties use nostalgic themes and symbolic politicking to idealize community, defend local autonomy, and ultimately draw local identity into the electoral realm. While other explanations of the radical right's popularity typify supporters as victims of macro-economic shifts and strains, the author's account explores people's day-to-day experiences that link local connections to political decisions. The analysis also raises questions about the political implications of different formal authority structures such as the level and nature of power devolved to local units. The localist model of radical right support illuminates the psychological, social, and institutional conditions and processes that render people's feelings about their cities, towns, and villages relevant for politics.
fitzgerald2018close
http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781108377218. Germany has long been considered "hard ground" for radical-right parties, yet the AfD has expanded rapidly over the past decade and, in 2025, fielded numerous highly competitive district candidates, raising concerns about potential AfD direct mandates. Against this backdrop, we investigate whether mainstream voters coordinated their candidate choices to prevent these candidates from winning. In a first study, we analyze district-level election results to assess how the strength of AfD candidates shapes patterns of candidate-vote competition. Stronger AfD contenders are associated with a lower number of effective candidates and with notable overperformance of the leading non-AfD candidate, especially in closely contested districts. In a second study, we combine district results with survey data from the German Longitudinal Election Study and estimate multilevel models to test whether voters cross partisan lines under competitive threat. The analysis confirms that voters are willing to support the most viable non-AfD candidate in districts where the AfD is particularly strong, thus providing direct evidence of strategic candidate voting at the individual level. Overall, our findings show how variation in the local strength of AfD candidates shapes strategic coordination among voters, with more competitive districts generating stronger support for the leading non-AfD alternative.
GESIS-SSOAR
Alvarez, R.
