Universe: The starting point for the sample is the so-called survey of families.

Sampling Procedure: The Youth Survey 2000 is based on two subsamples:
1. The so-called Replicative Survey which refers to a cross-section survey
with net 8091 persons between the ages of 18 and 55
living in private households in Germany.
Roughly proportional to the distribution of the residential population
6613 interviews were conducted in the old states
and 10478 interviews in the new states.
The young people selected in the framework of this survey
form the first part of the sample of the Youth Survey.
2. Beyond this young people living in the household of an
(adult) target person were additionally taken into the sample.

The 16 to 19-year-olds
forming the population in the Youth Survey (supplement survey) 2000
were primarily (n=2417) interviewed within the framework of the
main interview of the Survey of Families (respondents 18 years old and older).
255 young people (16 to 17-year-olds living in the household
with target persons) were interviewed in supplement interviews.
