AN ISLAMIC CRITIQUE OF MODERNITY IN TURKEY: POLITICS OF DIFFERENCE BACKWARDS
In: ORIENT, 1, 1999, 53-70
Abstract: THIS ARTICLE LOOKS AT A NEW SOCIETAL REARRANGEMENT MODEL THAT IS BEING DEBATED AMONG THE MUSLIM SCHOLARS IN TURKEY IN THE 1990S. THE MODEL WAS DEVELOPED BY ALI BULAC WHO REVIVED THE IDEA OF THE MEDINA CONTRACT IN THE 1990S. IT POINTS TO SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AN ISLAMIC POLITICS OF DIFFERENCE AND A POSTMODERN ONE. GENERALLY SPEAKING, BULAC'S FORMULATIONS CONTAIN A REJECTION OF MODERNITY WHILE POSTMODERN CRITIQUES OF MODERNITY INVOLVE AN EFFORT TO TRANSCENT MODERNITY AS WELL AS A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH IT.
