Notes: Question module QA ´Designing Europe’s future´ is largely based on Standard Eurobarometer waves 86.2 (ZA6788), 84.3 (ZA6643), 83.3 (ZA5998), 79.3 (ZA5689), and 77.3 (ZA5612).
Question module QB ‘E-Communications and Digital Single Market’ is partly based on questions asked in the context of the corresponding module surveyed in the framework of Eurobarometer 84.2 (ZA6642). For parts of the e-communications questions, the respondents are asked to answer for their household. Alternative weighting variables are suited for the descriptive analysis of the corresponding variables on household level (w31 to w79 and wex_hh).
Starting with Eurobarometer 81.3 (with 84.1 for Germany), the category scheme for country specific protocol variables P6 (SIZE OF COMMUNITY) has changed considerably. Categories for all countries have been harmonized among each other to three values (Rural area - Towns and suburbs/small urban area - Cities/large urban areas).
Starting with Eurobarometer 81.3 the category scheme for country specific protocol variables P7 (REGION) has changed for some countries, in particular introducing NUTS categories for Ireland, Estonia, and Croatia.
Please note that gen1 to gen6 are based on age instead of year of birth, which may entail a slightly inaccurate categorization for some respondents. Moreover, additional discrepancy in the categorization might be due to the potential use of years other than the survey year.
Derived variable d43_qb1 has been modified in dataset version v3-0-0 to make consistent with the official tabular report. Respondents who answer DK (code 11) in source variable qb1_1 have been recoded to ‘9’ (Inap. (11 in qb1_1)) in d43_qb1. Furthermore, there are slight implausibilities in the combined answer categories when comparing with the source variables d43a, d43b, and qb1_1. This might be due to the mix of personal and household related questions.
Derived variable qb5t_1 has been modified and corrected by GESIS. Cases coded ‘98’ (‘Other combination or unknown combination (1 in qb5_2 to qb5_8 only once and 1 in qb5_9) ’) and ´99´ (‘No bundle mentioned (1 in qb5_1)’) have been constructed in accordance with input variables qb5_1 to qb5_10. Categories 1 and 4 to 9 have been corrected in accordance with input variables qb5_1 to qb5_10 and are consistent with official results.
Derived variable qb12t_4 has been modified and corrected by GESIS in accordance with input variables qb12_1 to qb12_4 and information in the official Excel volume: Respondents coded DK throughout variables qb12_1 to qb12_4 have been coded to ‘0’ (Not mentioned) in qb12t_4. Please note: In contrast to the supplied dataset, the official Excel volumes disregard certain cases with no other (landline or personal mobile) phone in d43a/b (coded 99 in qb12_1 or qb12_2) in qb12t_4.
Derived variable qb12tt_4 has also been modified by GESIS, now corresponding with the Excel volume: Respondents coded DK in variables qb12_5 and qb12_6 have been coded to ‘0’ (Not mentioned) in qb12tt_4.
Derived variable qb12t3_4 has been modified and corrected by GESIS in accordance with input variables qb12_1 to qb12_6 and information in the official Excel volume: Respondents coded DK throughout variables qb12_1 to qb12_6 have been coded to ‘0’ (Not mentioned) in qb12t3_4. Please note: In line with the official Excel volume, the previous version of this variable (up to v2-0-0) disregards certain cases with no other (landline or personal mobile) phone in d43a/b (coded 99 in qb12_1 or qb12_2) in qb12t_4. This was adjusted by GESIS in version v3-0-0 in order to establish conformity with qb12t_4.
Derived variables qb14t_1 and qb14t_2 differ slightly in categories 4 and 5 from the official tabular reports. Cases coded DK in filter variables qb12_1 resp. qb12_2 are included in category 4 in the dataset at hand, whereas in the Excel volumes these cases are assigned to category 5. Please consult the detailed value labels of the categories for further information.
Variable split was derived by GESIS on the basis of qa10_4 and qa10_5.
Module QA is available starting with version v2-0-0 (embargo update).
The end-of-fieldwork dates implied by the values in protocol variable p1 (date of interview) differ slightly from those indicated in the technical specifications provided by TNS for some countries.
No data are available for protocol items p8 (postal code), p9 (sample point number), p10 (interviewer number) and p11.

Notes: All question modules are asked in the standard Eurobarometer context and largely replicate questions asked in the context of Eurobarometer 80.1 [ZA5876].
Category scheme for country specific protocol variables P6 (SIZE OF COMMUNITY) has changed considerably, except for Germany. Categories for all other countries have been harmonized among each other to three values (Rural area - Towns and suburbs / small urban area - Cities / large urban areas). For TURKEY the data provided by TNS do not match with the new scheme, but most likely appear to match with the former 5-point scheme. Value labels applied in former versions were not correct and non-matching data were coded to ´99´ (SYSTEM MISSING in the original data set). Variable p6tr has been reconstructed by the archive for dataset version v3-0-0 using SIZE OF COMMUNITY data for Turkey included in a former integrated variable P6 (ALL COUNTRIES) with the “old” 5-point category scheme.
Category scheme for country specific protocol variables P7 (REGION) has changed for some countries, in particular introducing NUTS categories for Ireland, Estonia and Croatia.
Data for protocol variables p1 (date of interview), p2 (time of interview), p3 (duration of interview), p8 (postal code), p9 (sample point number) and p10 (interviewer number) have not been made available.
Two duplicate cases (one doublet) in terms of identical coding of all substantial variables (except qd5_1) and demographics have been identified for Austria. The corresponding case id variables are not identical. UNIQID is coded ‘12002223’/’12002585’. CASEID is coded ‘2223’/’2585’.
An dataset update has been provided by TNS and all populations size weighting variables, protocol variables p4 and p5, a few corrected variables (d8, qa12_6, qd7.4, qd7.14) and slightly differently constructed variables (gen1, gen3, gen6) have subsequently been merged into the first dataset release (v1.0.0) by the archive.

2017-12-11 | p6is | The coding for SIZE OF COMMUNITY in Iceland is highly questionable. When comparing frequencies for category 1 “Rural area” and category 3 “Cities/large urban area” with former waves and crosstabulating with REGION - ICELAND, these two categories appear to be exchanged. | 2018-01-04 The variable has been corrected by the Archive (recode p6is (1=3) (3=1)) in version v3-0-0. |
2017-12-06 | d8r1 | Recoded variable d8r1 is partly erroneous. Cases coded 74 to 96 indicate the specific age of the respondents when stopped full-time education (see source variable d8) and should be assigned to category 9 "22 years and older". The variable will be corrected with the next update. | 2018-01-04 variable corrected |
2017-08-29 | p13mk | Please note the reversed coding of p13mk, i.e. respondents who selected the Macedonian questionnaire are erroneously coded 2 ("Albanian") and respondents who selected the Albanian questionnaire are coded 1 ("Macedonian"). The variable will be corrected with the next update. | 2018-01-04 The variable has been corrected by the archive (recode p13mk (1=2) (2=1)) in version v3-0-0. |
2016-07-28 | p7at, p7at_r | Please notice that value label for code 6 in p7at should read "Kaernten (Carinthia)". As confirmed by TNS, the addition of Osttirol (Eastern Tyrol) as suggested by the original value label is not correct. Herewith variable p7at corresponds to the NUTS 2 classification for Austria. Variables labels should read: p7at “REGION - AUSTRIA NUTS 2” and p7at_r “REGION - AUSTRIA NUTS 1”. The value label and variable labels will be corrected with the next update. | 2018-01-04 value label and variable labels corrected |
2016-06-02 | p6tr | Starting with Eurobarometer 81.3 protocol variable P6 (SIZE OF COMMUNITY) has been standardized across countries applying the following category scheme: 1) Rural area; 2) Towns and suburbs/small urban area; 3) Cities/ large urban area. For TURKEY the data provided by TNS do not match with the new scheme, but most likely appear to match with the former 5-point scheme: 1) Less than 10.001 inhabitants; 2) 10.001 to 20.000 inhabitants; 3) 20.001 to 100.000 inhabitants; 4) 100.001 to 500.000 inhabitants; 5) More than 500.000 inhabitants. Currently applied value labels are not correct and non-matching data are coded to ´99´ (SYSTEM MISSING in the original data set). You might use SIZE OF COMMUNITY data for Turkey included in variable P6 (ALL COUNTRIES) with the “old” 5-point category scheme. | 2018-01-04 Variable p6tr has been reconstructed by the archive for dataset version v3-0-0 using SIZE OF COMMUNITY data for Turkey included in a former integrated variable P6 (ALL COUNTRIES) with the “old” 5-point category scheme. |
2015-02-11 | p13lu | The coding for LANGUAGE OF QUESTIONNAIRE in LUXEMBOURG is highly questionable. If comparing frequencies for GERMAN and FRENCH with former waves, these two categories appear to be exchanged. | 2018-01-04 The coding has been corrected by the archive. |
